  • Duterte wants three-child policy in PH
  • Amidst the possibility of having conflicts with the church, presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte wants to push for family planning once he assumes office on June 30, 2016.

In a report from CNN Philippines, Duterte spoke to reporters on May 22 about bringing back family planning after talking to one of his supporters who had 10 children. He said couples should only have two to three children at most for them to properly raise their kids.

He cited the country’s problem with overpopulation as a reason to reinstate family planning. He’s looking towards Davao City’s Family code, where they give away contraceptives for free, as well as giving incentives to women who voluntarily go through tubal ligation.

When asked about how the church will react, he says he may be Catholic, but he’s also a realist. He says he is willing to have a debate with church leaders and explain why the country needs a proper family planning program.

This is the latest in the feisty Davao City Mayor’s string of policies he will implement once he takes his place as the country’s 16th president come June 30. He’s looking to enforce some of the policies already implemented in Davao City, like the city’s liquor and smoking ban, as well as a curfew for minors.
