  • Matcha Bar in Makati: Elevating the Matcha Ritual from Davao to Manila
  • Matcha Bar, a beloved Davao-based café known for its single-minded focus on premium matcha, has expanded its presence to Metro Manila with a new location on Salcedo Street in Legazpi Village, Makati.

Matcha Bar’s journey began in Davao City in 2018, when it first introduced premium Japanese matcha powder to a local market that was still largely unfamiliar with the ingredient. What started as a quiet venture slowly built a following among those curious about matcha’s depth, quality, and tradition.

Despite the slow beginnings, the team remained committed to sourcing exceptional matcha and sharing it in its purest form. In 2023, Matcha Bar took a more immersive approach by opening its first café—creating a space where people could experience matcha thoughtfully rather than as a passing trend.

Founded by Sahara Lara Casteel, the café reflects her belief in balance, flavor, and ingredient integrity. Having studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Kuala Lumpur and earned a diploma in plant-based cuisine, Sahara brings a mindful, quality-driven perspective to everything served. Though the café is drink-focused, her background naturally influences the way Matcha Bar approaches preparation and flavor harmony.

Matcha Bar is best known as a purveyor of premium Japanese matcha and carefully crafted tea-based beverages. One of its must-try offerings is the Matcha Signature (Php 310), a classic matcha latte served with a side of house-made nama chocolate. The pairing creates a beautiful balance of earthy depth, creaminess, and subtle sweetness—perfect for those new to matcha and longtime enthusiasts alike.

Those seeking a warm, soothing option will enjoy the Kinako Hojicha (Php 270), a latte made with dark-roasted hojicha and kinako, or roasted soybean flour. With its nutty, toasty profile and very low caffeine content, it’s ideal for slow afternoons or evening visits.

For something familiar yet unexpected, the Matcha London Fog (Php 270) blends Earl Grey tea with matcha, resulting in a comforting drink layered with citrusy notes and gentle bitterness. It’s a refreshing take on a classic that showcases Matcha Bar’s creative yet respectful approach to tea.

Beyond beverages, Matcha Bar crafts everything in-house—from purées and syrups to pastes—ensuring each element complements the matcha’s natural character. Even the small indulgences are made with care, including breads and pastries, all freshly prepared in their kitchen.
