Filipino Wins ASEAN Identity Logo Design Competition
Joemari Manguiat, a Filipino graphic designer from Lipa, Batangas, bags first prize at the 2020 Year of ASEAN Identity Logo Design Competition held last January 21, 2020 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The said competition was initiated by the ASEAN Secretariat with the support of the ASEAN-German Cooperation to stimulate young people’s creativity in interpreting ASEAN Identity. After its launch in September of last year, there had been 1,378 entries from all ASEAN Member States.
Manguiat’s winning design was inspired by a ‘blooming flower,’ which represents prosperity and unity among the ASEAN Member States. The design itself is composed of three things which were classified as a flower, ASEAN Countries, and Youth and/or Abstract People.
The Abstract People represents the youth of ASEAN and how they are helping each other towards the association’s mission and vision. The colors red and blue, on the other hand, represent the colors of all ASEAN countries’ flags. The former also symbolizes courage and dynamism while the latter signifies peace and stability.
The design has 10 petals in a circular shape representing each ASEAN Member States and their unity. The shape of a flower also depicts the cultural diversity and economic prosperity of each country.
Manguiat’s design will be featured in various materials and high profile events throughout 2020 to celebrate and foster ASEAN Identity.

It was supported in the 21st ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council Meeting and was also encouraged to have greater cross-sectoral collaborations to promote ASEAN awareness as well as foster ASEAN Identity.
