Watch: PPAP has taken over the internet
The internet just exploded with another viral hit, this time coming from the Land of the Rising Sun.
PPAP. This 1-minute clip starring Piko Taro has taken over the internet. Video by Piko Taro.
PPAP, short for Pen Pineapple Apple Pen, has officially gone viral with the original video having been viewed by more than 9 million users on YouTube as of this writing. It’s become a global sensation, with the most recent news coming from Canadian Singer Justin Bieber.

If you’re still not in the loop, PPAP was created by DJ-comedian Kosaka Daimaou, or Kazuhiko Kosaka in real life. The video is only a month old, but it had not gained steam until it was shared on the Facebook account of website 9Gag, which has been viewed 58 million times as of writing.
A TUTORIAL. Piko Taro released this tutorial one day after his video went viral on 9GAG.
It’s so popular that it already has its own challenge, dubbed the #PPAPChallenge. It’s already dubbed as an earworm, a song or tune that you’ll find hard to get out of your head, thanks to its ridiculously simple lyrics, the catchy tune, and the simplest of dance moves.
These things make it possible for anyone to imitate what they see on the video, making it an instant hit.
PPAP HEAVY METAL. It’s gone beyond just lip syncing. Someone even made a metal version of this song! Video by カブキン Kabukin.
Local celebrities who have tried it so far are Mikee Agustin and Xian Lim from ABS-CBN along with Maine Mendoza, Alden Richards, and the trio of Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros.
With so many people doing it across the globe, it’s already been pegged by media as an eventual successor to Korean rapper Psy’s Gangnam Style, which to date has over 2.65 million views and holds the record as the first Youtube video to eclipse the 1-billion views mark. Only time will tell if it will indeed become the next “Gangnam Style”.
