In an effort to bring quality education to far-flung areas in the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepED) and Microsoft Philippines teamed up together to launch EGG, a self-contained, transportable classroom.
This self-sustaining and fully-functional learning facility called EGG can accommodate more than 30 students which can easily be set up in three days. It is an innovative approach to provide education anywhere in the country, which can generate its own water and power system, and it also has its own internet connectivity.
This EGG can be dropped off by helicopter, truck or boat. According to Karrie Ilagan, General Manager for Microsoft Philippines, “We believe now is the perfect time to fully harness the power of technology and help Filipino learners get a 21st century education through connectivity for all.” This EGG is also equipped with IT tools which aid both students and teachers. It can also be used as a storm shelter for areas where they can be deployed. EGG’s internet is connected to internet via TV White Space, an unused VHF and UHF TV channels which can deliver broadband access over wider areas.
The EGG can also serve as an independent classroom or can be stacked together with other EGGs to “form clusters, pop-up classrooms, or a whole school,” according to DepED’s press release.
The first EGG will be launched in Bohol on July. As of now, DepED is still looking to implement them in other provinces in the near future.
