  • For most parents, problems in the ear, nose, and throat area are quite problematic–especially during the changing of seasons.

Get to know Dr. Clydine M.A. Guevara-Barrientos, M.D., FPSO-HNS., one of the country’s specialists in Ear, Nose, and Throat to Head and Neck Surgery.

Ear, Nose, Throat – Head and Neck Surgery, Subspecialty in Pediatric Ear, Nose, Throat – Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Clydine comes from a family of medical professionals, in fact, it was her uncle that inspired her to take ENT as a specialty. Her subspecialty in Pediatric ENT came later when she was already a resident ENT. As a resident, she dealt with patients of varying age ranges and saw that she loved handling children, which ultimately led to her decision to go into the pediatric subspecialty without going into general pediatrics.

Dr. Clydine went to Chicago, USA for her fellowship because there were no existing Pediatric ENT fellowships in the country during her time of training. Being in the profession for 18 years now, she is one of the 13 Pediatric ENTs that the Philippines currently has.

Pediatric ENTs are responsible for treating all illnesses that are related to the ear, nose, and throat–from ear cleaning to the removal of the tonsils, and Dr. Clydine does all of that. She gets referrals from pediatricians for further treatment relating to the cases that were mentioned.

As a mother of four, she treats her patients like her children. She explains that she adds a motherly touch whenever she handles her patients, making it a point to exhaust all medical treatment that do not result in surgery. She states that she tries her very best to avoid surgery at all costs, and only does them when they are unavoidable.

She also accepts adult patients in her clinic, but of course, she usually puts the children first.

Teaching is also one of her passions, apart from medicine. She was able to incorporate her teaching into her current profession as she is a professor at the Manila Central University’s College of Medicine. She is also the resident’s training officer at Makati Medical Center, and is responsible for training and teaching the incoming consultants.

For future doctors, Dr. Clydine advises that you treat medicine like science and art, not only as a job but also as a passion. You have to commit yourself to it because it’s something that you have to be physically and emotionally attached to.
