  • Happened last November 28, 2018, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) launched the 2nd edition of the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art in Print Edition–the most authoritative and comprehensive source of information of Philippine Art and Culture.

    The print edition is composed of over 5,000 entries featuring essays in art history, forms, and types of arts, aspects of production, major works, biographies, and profiles. This is accompanied by over 3,500 photos and illustrations from first-hand resources put together by more than 500 respected Filipino scholars, experts, researchers, and writers.

    The 2nd edition took five years to complete and is now finally available for purchase from the CCP

    The first edition was published in 1994, and with the help of both the previous and the current administration, the 12-volume compendium is now officially available for Php 50,000. It is an invaluable record of the Filipinos’ artistic contribution to the world.

    Volumes 1 to 3 – Peoples of the Philippines contains comprehensive articles on major ethno-linguistic groups of the country, presenting the unique artistic and cultural expressions within the Philippine archipelago.

    Volume 4 – Architecture features an extensive coverage of the Philippine architectural landscape, presenting the history, development, and prospects of ingenious and contemporary communities and structures.

    Volume 1 -Peoples of the Philippines will cover the way of living and culture of each sub category of communities of the archipelago

    Volume 5 – Visual Arts explains various expressions of the Filipino visual tradition, from indigenous crafts to contemporary forms.

    Volume 6 – Film follows the evolution of Philippine cinema from the silent film era to the digital age.

    Volume 7 – Music contains compositions, instruments, artists, and groups that shaped Philippine music throughout history.

    Volume 8 – Dance contains the continuing traditions in dance from the pre-Islamic and pre-Christian eras to the Hispanic and American colonial periods, up to contemporary times.

    Basilio Esteban S. Villaruz, awardee of Gawad CCP Para sa Sining (CCP Awards for the Arts), places the 8th Volume: Dance during the launch as its Area Editor 

    Volume 9 – Theater traditions from the various regions, localities, groups, and sectors of Philippine society from precolonial to contemporary times.

    Volume 10 – Broadcast Arts or Radio is a new addition to the encyclopedia. This is the first comprehensive baseline information on the history, evolution, program development, artists, and personalities to contemporary times.

    Volume 11 to 12 – Literature tackles the treatise on all the oral and written literary traditions across the archipelago and beyond.

    The encyclopedia is an informative and comprehensive source of information, which will be useful for students and researchers

    Plus, the encyclopedia will be accompanied by soon to be released digital edition, which will contain all the information of the 2nd edition. The content will be continuously updated to follow changes and new innovations, equipped with images, audiovisual clips, navigational tools, as well as online and offline versions.
