  • Dongji Xiangju in Makati: Showcasing the Bold Flavors of Hunan Province
  • Hunan cooking, also known as Xiang cuisine, stands among China’s most celebrated regional culinary traditions. It is characterized by deep, layered flavors, bold heat, vibrant aromas, and soft, tender textures shaped by techniques such as braising, steaming, and stir-frying.

In Makati, one Chinese restaurant specializes in the art of Hunan cooking, bringing the fiery spirit and rich culinary heritage of Hunan Province to local diners. This is Dongji Xiangju, a dining destination found in Salcedo Village, Makati City.

Dongji Xiangju builds on the legacy of two Chinese restaurants established in 2015 and 2018. These are Xin Fuji and Uncle Mao’s (Xiangju), respectively, carrying forward their culinary roots while refining the Hunan flavors they first introduced.

Now, the corporation operates two Chinese restaurants under its umbrella, Hunan Noodles in Pasay City and Dongji Xiangju in Makati, each dedicated to showcasing the bold, spice-forward flavors that define Hunan cooking.

To reach Dongji Xiangju, guests must first enter Antel Corporate Center and head up a flight of stairs. Its identity becomes unmistakable as you reach a striking doorway adorned with a vivid red banner inscribed with gold Chinese characters, quietly signaling that you’ve arrived at Xiangju.

Inside is a simple medley of Lazy Susans and rectangular tables, arranged in a no-frills setting that places the focus squarely on the food. This is backdropped against deep blue-green walls that give a stylish accent to the modest yet functional space, well-suited for both intimate family meals and lively group gatherings.

To experience the flavors of Hunan cooking, the Steamed Pork on their menu is a must-try. The dish is pressure-cooked until the meat turns exceptionally tender, bringing out its natural flavors and texture. It is then laid over a bed of plum leaves, which lend a delicate, fragrant aroma to the dish.

Other best-sellers on their menu include the Bacon Pork (Php 1,180), Fried Beef (Php 680), Pork with Chili (Php 460), and Tomato with Egg (Php 420).

For those who wish to enjoy their recommended dishes in a more intimate group setting, the restaurant offers two private rooms, ideal for family gatherings, business meetings, or celebratory feasts. The whole restaurant, on the other hand, can accommodate up to 50 persons.

In a city filled with regional Chinese dining spots, Dongji Xiangju stands out for its steadfast devotion to Hunan’s bold, fiery flavors. For those craving an authentic taste of Hunan in Makati, head on to Dongji Xiang ju!
