  • EXPAT’S GUIDE: Dampa Restaurants in the Pasay Bay Area
  • If you’re an expat in the Philippines wanting to try a local dining adventure featuring fresh seafood, visiting a dampa seafood market in Pasay should be high on your foodie list!

The word dampa refers to a market setup where fresh seafood is sold alongside nearby restaurants offering paluto (to have it cooked) services. It’s a fun, interactive experience where you handpick your seafood and decide exactly how you want it cooked. Think of it as part wet market, part seafood restaurant, and all-out Filipino hospitality rolled into one.

Two of the most popular Dampa destinations in Metro Manila are Seascape Village and Dampa Seaside Market. The latter is known for its bustling vibe and straightforward market-to-table experience, while the former has a more upscale atmosphere with open-air restaurants, al fresco seating, and even VIP event spaces. Both are perfect for casual group gatherings or festive family lunches.

When it comes to choosing seafood, here are some handy tips: look for clear eyes and shiny skin when buying fish, as they are signs of freshness. For crabs, choose those that feel heavy for their size, which means they’re full of meat. Prawns and shrimp should have firm, translucent flesh with no slimy residue. For shellfish like mussels and oysters, make sure the shells are tightly closed. Don’t hesitate to ask fishmongers when the catch came in. Lastly, it’s part of the dampa experience to chat and haggle with the vendors!

Once you’ve scored your fresh catch, head to a nearby paluto restaurant where cooking fees usually range from Php 250-300 per kilo, depending on the dish. Popular spots in Seascape Village include Kurt Ilonggo, which is known for its generous portions and flavorful dishes.

When deciding on your dishes, go for Filipino favorites like garlic butter shrimp, steamed lapu-lapu, baked mussels with cheese, sinigang na hipon (shrimp in tamarind soup), and grilled tuna. You can even mix cooking styles for variety—grill some, fry some, and have others cooked in soup or sizzling with spices. Always tell the restaurant how spicy you want your food and if you prefer saucy or dry-style dishes.

For the best dampa experience, bring a local friend to help haggle prices and choose the freshest seafood. Wear casual attire, for things can get lively and messy with all the seafood cracking and dipping sauces! Most vendors and restaurants accept cash and G-cash, but it’s smart to bring smaller bills. Also, if you’re planning a weekend visit, come early to beat the crowds and secure good seating.

Dampa dining is an unforgettable mix of fresh flavors, local culture, and good company. Truly, it’s a unique Filipino culinary adventure you’ll want to experience over and over again!
