Award-winning Filipinos in the International Scene
The Philippines is home to the most talented people in the world. Be it singing, dancing, or cooking skills, there’s at least one Filipino experienced in a particular field that makes him/her worth the recognition. Just recently, several Filipino actors and actresses were honored internationally for their acting expertise in their respective films, and here are just some of them:

1. Jaclyn Jose
As a first for the Philippines, veteran actress Jaclyn Jose won the Best Actress award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for Ma’ Rosa, directed by award-winning director Brillante Mendoza. Jose played the titular character, who is an impoverished mother selling drugs.

2. LJ Reyes
For the independent film Anino sa Likod ng Buwan, Filipina actress LJ Reyes won the best actress award at the 13th Pacific Meridian International Film Festival in Russia. The movie, directed by Jun Lana, was about the darker periods of Philippine history.

3. John Lloyd Cruz
Most sought-after and one of the most popular actors in his generation John Lloyd Cruz has recently been awarded the Star Asia Award given at the 15th New York Asian Film Festival. Cruz is the first Southeast Asian to receive the said award.

4. Alessandra de Rossi
For the movie Sta Niña, actress Alessandra de Rossi won the Best Actress award at the 1st Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) International Film Festival and Awards held in Sarawak, Malaysia. The film, which bagged more awards also won in the Best Picture-Drama category.

5. Cherie Gil
Celebrated actress Cherie Gil won the Best Actress award for the foreign language feature category at the Madrid International Film Festival for the film Mana. The said film also won the Best Feature Film. Mana is a film shot in Negros, which tells the story of family and traditions.

6. Barbie Forteza
18-year old actress Barbie Forteza who has starred in several teen shows and independent films showcased her acting skills as she won the Best Actress at the 36th Fantasporto International Film Festival at Oporto, Portugal for the film Laut. The film tells the story of the ethnic group Sama d’Laut, which makes it an eye-opener for the community’s culture.

7. Sid Lucero
Award-winning actor Sid Lucero was recently named as Best Actor for his performance at the 19th Los Angeles Comedy Festival Awards for the film Toto. The film also won as the Best Foreign Film in the said festival. Lucero also played the titular character Toto, a room service attendant wanting to achieve the American dream.

8. Eugene Domingo
Well-known theater actress and comedienne Eugene Domingo was named Best Actress in the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival held in 2013. Domingo plays a woman who took over a barber shop business set in the 1970s. Domingo is known to have starred in several commercial and independent films in the Philippines.

9. Cherry Pie Picache
For her second international award, Filipina actress Cherry Pie Picache was named as Best Actress from the Durban International Film Fest in South Africa. She was recognized for her role as Thelma, a temporary foster parent in the film Foster Child. The said fim which was directed by Brillante Mendoza also won the Best Film award.

10. Nora Aunor
Known as one of the most famous actresses in PH, Nora Aunor has bagged several acting awards for her portrayal as Flor Contemplacion in the critically-acclaimed film The Flor Contemplacion Story. Aunor won Best Actress Award in the 1995 Cairo International Film Festival. The film was about the story of a Filipina domestic helper hanged in Singapore. The said film was also exhibited in various countries’ film festivals in the world.
