Exactly a month before taking office, the Philippine congress proclaims President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President-elect Leni Robredo on Monday afternoon (May 30) in Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.

The said joint session was convened by the Senate and the House of Representatives as they took up the report of the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC). The said proclamation was not attended by Duterte, and was reported to be in Davao to sign documents according to his chief of staff, Bong Go. Duterte was represented by lawyer Salvador Panelo a member of his legal team during the canvassing.

On the other hand, Vice President-elect Leni Robredo attended the ceremony and was accompanied by her daughters Aika, Tricia, and Jillian.

The proclamation was made after the Congress who were also sitting as the NBOC was done verifying 167 certificates of canvass from the country and overseas last May 27.

Duterte, who did not show up in the proclamation, garnered 16,601,997 votes from the official tally, while Robredo got 14,418,817 votes, making her the winning candidate. Previously, allegations of cheating were reported when the Marcos camp suspected poll cheating. However, after the final vote count, Robredo led the race as she got 263,473 votes ahead of Bongbong Marcos.

Before the electrion, both Duterte and Robredo have been previously involved in PHL politics. Duterte is mayor of Davao City, while Robredo worked as Camarines Sur representative. The newly-elected President and Vice-President shall take their oath on June 30.
