  • The traveling exhibition telling the history of the Japanese martial arts launched last night at the National Museum. With a karate demonstration to welcome us, we were all set for The Spirit of Budo Exhibit at the National Museum of Fine Arts.

The international traveling exhibit showcased martial arts gear, the helmets, the weapons. Before it was a sport, martial arts in Japan was mainly learned for combat and the many wars that Japan has faced.

The armor is heavy as well as decorative, showing both power and strength. The choice of weapons also varies from intricately designed katanas and longbows. Prints of many artworks depicting the samurai were exhibited alongside the articles.

For the launch, a karate exhibition was led by Ms. Jenna Tsukii, a five-time All-Japan champion with extensive competition experience. Karate is a sport that embodies the martial art spirit or “Bushido Spirit”.

The demos and workshops will be held at the National Museum Auditorium on the following dates:

    August 25, 2018, 10 a.m. – Arnis
    September 1, 2018, 11 a.m. – Kendo
    September 8, 2018, 11 a.m. – Judo
