Filipino student wins annual Breakthrough Junior Challenge

Filipino pride soars high as Hilary Andales, a resident of Palo, Leyte won The Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an annual global competition for students to inspire creative thinking about science.

Students ages 13 to 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original videos (3 minutes in length maximum) that bring to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics or mathematics.

Already in its third year, the eighteen-year-old won the competition after making it the finals with her submission on a video on reference frames. Hilary received $250,000 educational prizes as she outdid a large number of students from 178 countries that registered and passed videos as well.

In line with the reward, her professor or mentor will also receive $50,000 and $100,000 for her school’s new science laboratory. She also won the popular vote last year adding impact to her submission. Hilary is an active student as well in terms of extracurricular activities in her school. She has also written a mathematics review book for students before.
