  • In a report published by meti.go.jp, Japan and the Philippines concluded a bilateral document on January 12, 2017 to establish a Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country with the help of Japan’s outstanding low-carbon technology.

Kazuhide Ishikawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the Philippines, and Regina Paz L. Lopez, Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, signed the agreement to establish a joint committee and launch the operation of the JCM in the Philippines.

Through the mechanism, Japan will contribute not only to the Philippines’ environmental, energy and economic growth but also to international efforts to prevent climate change.

According to mmechanisms.org, JCM evaluate contributions from Japan to greenhouse gas emission reductions or removals in a quantitative manner achieved through the diffusion of low carbon technologies, products, systems, services, and infrastructure as well as implementation of mitigation actions in developing countries.

To-date, there are 17 JCM partner countries including Mongolia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Maldives, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Palau, Cambodia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Myanmar, Thailand, and Philippines.
