The construction began in 2015 under the Japanese Airport Consultants (JAC) and Chiyoda-Mitsubishi Joint Venture. (CMJV). It has been funded through Official Development Assistance (ODA) by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The 7.8-billion airport project is said to be the Philippines’ first eco-airport, dubbed as the “Green Gateway to the World.”
Following the “highest standards of green and sustainable structures,” the airport will feature solar panels on the roof of the Passenger Terminal Building, LED lighting fixtures, and motion sensor light switches. Moreover, the airport will mainly rely on sunlight for daylighting and air for ventilation.
Panglao airport will comprise an 8,631-sqm terminal and a 2.5-km runway. After starting operations, the runway will also extend 300 meters longer.
The airport can serve up to two million passengers in the opening year, a significant difference compared with Tagbilaran Airport which is currently the only air terminal operating in the province and accommodating 800,000 travelers.
