  • When we think of Vietnamese cuisine, the first thing that usually comes to mind is pho. However, there is another signature Vietnamese cuisine that we should try and get to know even more – the Banh Mi.

    Banh Mi or pronounced as Ban Mee is a Vietnamese term for “bread”. After being colonized by the French, people in Vietnam started to indulge bread as part of their main menu or as a replacement for rice. Even after the colonizers had already left, this influence on local food and culture remained with the Vietnamese people up to today.  We have listed places where you can get your first bite of this Vietnamese staple.

     

    Bon Bahn Mi

    Bon Bahn Mi made its way to the public last 2013. It is owned by a Vietnamese couple who had been in the country for a couple of years. What makes the Bahn Mi in Bon Bahn Mi is the authenticity of the product is authentic as it can get. They serve a variety of Banh mi filling where you can choose from grilled beef, chicken, or roasted pork.

    Banh Mi -Php 99 medium; Php 119 large

    If you want to try Bon Bahn Mi’s version of the Bahn Mi, you may visit them at 8390 Mayapis St., San Antonio Village, Makati City. They are open daily from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm. Aside from their main branch in San Antonio Village, they also have other branches at Landmark Makati, and at SM Mall of Asia.

    Banh Nam

    Banh Nam is a franchise from Vietnam, which was brought over by a Vietnamese named Henry Nguyen. It would surprise you that he is actually a half-Filipino, his mother is a Filipino. Although a kiosk, Banh Nam still offers seats to their customers while still serving their famed sandwich. They have four kinds of Banh Mi, which includes traditional ham, chicken, and their Banh Nam original with a meatball.

    Traditional Banh Mi, Php 125

    If you want to try Banh Nam’s version of the Bahn Mi, you may visit them at 1/F Paseo Center, 8757 Paseo de Roxas, Makati City. They are open Mondays to Fridays from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

    Vina Trang Cuisine

    Vina Trang Cuisine’s traditional Banh Mi contains the usual ham, pickled cucumber, parsley and liver pate’. The pork is soft and flavorful, which leaves you wanting more. Even though the bun is too big for the filling, the flavors speak for themselves.

    If you want to try Vina Trang Cuisine’s version of the Bahn Mi, you may visit them at 8836 Rooftop, Sampaloc St., San Antonio Village, Makati City. They are open daily from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm.

    O’ Bahn Mi

    Pho Hoa has gained a reputation for being everyone’s “go-to Vietnamese restaurant” because of their pho and Banh Mi. Because of the popularity of the restaurant among local patrons, they have decided to extend their operations by opening a new restaurant that would cater to serving classic Vietnamese Banh Mi. O Banh Mi is a newly-opened joint that serves several variants of banh mi. It’s from the same owner of Pho Hoa.

    If you want to try Vina Trang Cuisine’s version of the Bahn Mi, you may visit them at Ayala Malls The 30th, 30 Meralco Ave, Ortigas, Pasig City. They are open from 10 AM to 9 PM (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sun), and 10 AM to 10 PM (Fridays to Saturdays).
