  • Get a taste of everything Japanese at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall as they commemorate the 61st annual Filipino-Japanese Friendship Month with a string of exciting activities and exhibits that bring two distinct cultures together.

    Shangri-La Plaza is kicking off the festivities on July 8 with Yuujuo: A Japanese Cultural Exhibit at the Luxury Lane that showcases the colorful heritage of Japan through their cultural artifacts.

    Also opening on July 7 is the highly anticipated EIGASAI Film Festival. With its lineup of award-winning Japanese films of different genres, it’s a film fest you should not miss, as some of the most critically acclaimed pieces of Japanese cinema will be on display until July 16 at the Shang Cineplex Cinema 2. Tickets are at Php 100 for each movie.

    Discover the Japanese art of stone appreciation through the Suiseki Exhibit, where the Natural Stone Society of the Philippines will be displaying different collections of Japanese stones that reflect objects of nature interspersed with specially cultivated bonsai pieces. Drop by the Grand Atrium from July 17 to 26 to catch the exhibit, as well as workshops on the art of suiseki.

    More Japanese-themed workshops that are sure to be fun for the whole family will also be held on two separate weekends, starting with The Life of Paper: Japanese Arts and Crafts on July 8 at 3 PM and an Origami Workshop on July 9 at 3 PM, both at the Grand Atrium.

    Drop by the Grand Atrium on July 15 for a Sashimi Cutting Demo with Watami at 2 p.m. Check out Bento by Kat’s Bento Making Workshop on July 16, 3 p.m. at the East Atrium before heading over to the Sushi Art Photography Workshop by Mark Floro, together with Canon, Sumosam and Akira, at 4 p.m. at the Grand Atrium.

    Get to know the distinct sounds of traditional Japanese music as the UP Tugma Koto Players treat guests to special performances at the East Wing on July 8 and 15 featuring the koto, Japan’s national musical instrument.

    Finally, experience a traditional Japanese marketplace at the Everything Japanese Lifestyle Fair as Shang’s very own Japanese brands and other select exhibitors come together and offer mall guests a range of Japanese goods, from food favorites and household items to arts and crafts materials. Catch the fair from July 14 to 23 at the Main Wing, Level 1.

    You don’t have to book a flight to the land of the rising sun to get a feel of Japanese history, art, and lifestyle. Visit the Shang this July to discover more of Japan’s rich heritage and the ways it’s interwoven into Filipino culture.
