  • Filipinos are back at it again, giving the world the best of the Philippines’ cuisine.

    Chefs Gene Gonzalez of Café Ysabel and Antonio “Tony Boy” Escalante of Antonio’s made it as finalists in the 21st World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence.

    Held on March 28 in Singapore, the awards night honored professionals and establishments from the F&B and hospitality industries across Asia.

    The World Gourmet Summit Awards Of Excellence, formerly known as Asian Gastronomic Awards Of Excellence, is an industry recognition programme that acknowledges individuals and organisations who make significant contributions to the development of the F&B and hospitality industries.

    Chef Gene Gonzalez is the chef-owner of Cafe Ysabel in San Juan and the co-founder of the Alta Cocina Filipina, the movement for contemporary Filipino cuisine. He is a Chef instructor to the Professional and Recreational courses. Aside from a series of apprenticeships in France and Italy, he has completed various specialized courses in food arts, Culinary Institute of America, California Culinary Academy and the Callebaut Chocolate College. He has undertaken research and development projects with major food manufacturers and flavor laboratories.

    Chef Antonio “Tony Boy” Escalante is the chef-owner of Antonio’s group of restaurants in Tagaytay. He was born in Negros Oriental and was raised amid the rich cultural tradition of his home province. Tony Boy learned about the joy even the simplest meals can offer at a young age, and he grew to understand how food can bring people together. According to Tony Boy, “food was always been important in my family, but it was also from my family that I learned to appreciate the beauty of the old, the traditional.”
