PH elects first transgender woman in the congress

Known for being a dominantly Catholic nation, PH makes a significant milestone for the LGBT community as the country elects the first transgender to take a seat in the congress.
Geraldine Roman, a transgender, is set to take the congress seat in Bataan which was previously held by her mother. Roman secured 23,814 votes against her opponent which has 10,325, based on the 92.7% of election returns processed.
The 49-year old Liberal Party candidate comes from a political family known in Bataan. Albeit being a newbie in politics, she said her priority will always be the people in Bataan and help send the poor to school.
With her historic victory, Roman hopes that more LGBT community members will be inspired to get into politics. Also, she said that she wants to inspire people who have experienced discrimination because of their gender.
Roman will represent the first district of Bataan comprised of Abucay, Dinalupihan, Hermosa, Morong, Orani, and Samal.
