  • Students Can Now Avail 20% Discount on PUVs
  • Time to save a portion of your allowance as the Student Fare Discount Act has officially been signed into law.

Under Republic Act 11314 or the Student Fare Discount Act, elementary, high school, tertiary, and technical-vocational students are entitled to a 20% discount on fares on all public utility vehicles (PUVs).

This includes domestic regular fares on public jeepneys, public buses, UV express vans, taxis, Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) units like Grab, MRT, LRT, PNR, marine vessels, and even aircraft.

Qualified students have to present their valid school IDs or their validated enrollment forms to avail the discount, which is valid during the entire time they are enrolled—including weekends and holidays.

However, the law does not cover school services, tourist services, and any other similar services under a contract. Post-graduate students and those taking short-term and seminar type courses are also not qualified for the said discount.

PUVs that refuse to abide with the law will be subjected to penalties including driver license suspension, cancellation of certificate of public convenience, and fines to up to Php 15,000.

RA 11314 was signed into law last April 17, 2019, but was only released to the media on July 15.
