Dr. Benjamin Abela Jr., M.D.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Benjamin Abela has been in the field of ophthalmology, with a sub-specialty in glaucoma for nearly 34 years now. While he primarily focuses on glaucoma treatment, he also treats other eye-illnesses like cataracts and conjunctivitis among others.
Dr. Abela entered the medical profession because his brother had inspired him to become a doctor when their father got ill. He also felt that there needed to be someone that would look out for their family which eventually led him to take up medicine. He acquired his medical degree from the University of the Philippines (UP) and his residency at the UP PGH. He then flew to Sweden for his fellowship and sub-specialty in glaucoma at the Lund University.
For Dr. Abela, while they normally have a very light lifestyle, ophthalmologists are not just typical doctors for they have the “best of both worlds.”
According to Dr. Abela, the medical industry always poses a challenge and is filled with excitement. But despite the challenges, he shares that cases must be handled with confidence so as to not make any mistakes.
Since most of Dr. Abela’s patients are older, he explains that, in order to be successful in his field, he treats his patients with compassion and firmness – especially those who are unfamiliar with certain eye-related diseases.
Dr. Abela was the pioneer department chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Asian Hospital. He also served as the immediate chairman of Ophthalmology at the Makati Medical Center. He currently leads the Philippine Glaucoma Society Foundation.
He advises future doctors to persevere and be hardworking for the road that they have to take is arduous.
