Most people like to assume that the life of a doctor is comfortable and that they are also the opulent type, but they fail to see beyond the success, the struggles, and the outer layer that they always portray. Doctors have ravaged through some of the toughest paths that are sometimes beyond our expectations. Being a doctor is one of the most selfless and most altruistic professions out there.

There is a saying that “children are your greatest investment,” and Dr. Victor Zapanta—a pediatrician with a sub-specialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine works to make sure that your young ones will grow and develop well.

Dr. Zapanta was introduced to medicine, especially pediatrics, by his parents at a young age. It was something that his parents aspired him to be, which he eventually and gradually became his cherished profession. After several years,  he went to the Robert Wood Johnson University of Medicine – University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey affiliated hospitals, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Monmouth Medical Center Longbranch wherein he underwent training in pediatrics and neonatology from 1981 to 1985. After his practice, he started to work in Phoenix, Arizona for 25 years as a neonatologist.

Dr. Zapanta came back to the Philippines in 2007 and began practicing neonatology focusing primarily on premature and ill newborns, and integrative wellness medicine at Cardinal Santos Medical Center, San Juan City, and Makati Medical Center. He shared that a typical working day includes doing rounds in the intensive care nursery, working with resident doctors, communicating with the patients’ parents, continuously doing research and readings, and attending conventions, conferences or meetings.

As a veteran in the Medicine industry, Dr. Zapanta shared a striking advice for aspiring medical practitioners“It takes a lot of hard work [and] passion that you really want to be in this type of career, treating and sitting with patients to make them healthy and treat their diseases. It is not an easy way to earn money but after doing your job, you feel rewarded somehow.” For Dr. Zapanta, the greatest reward is feeling a sense of personal and professional accomplishment.

Dr. Zapanta is currently expanding his profession towards integrative medicine, for which he just started to establish his clinic at Centuria Medical Makati.
