  • Duterte gives DENR 6 months to “fix Boracay”
  • In the Philippines, Boracay is one of the most visited tourist destinations. Located in Aklan in Central Visayas, Boracay has stunning beaches with white sand and clear blue waters surrounded the island.

What seems to be a paradise is now trouble. The influx of tourists has somehow created environmental problems that caught the attention of the local officials in Boracay.

This year, President Rodrigo Duterte is giving Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu 6 months to address the issues in Boracay, specifically those business establishments who are not following environmental regulations.

Duterte approved an executive order that would gather a task force to help improve Boracay’s current state. If not successful, the president said that he will order the closure of Boracay Island, calling it a “cesspool” during the Manila Times Business Forum in Davao City last February 9, 2018.

This isn’t the first time that Boracay made the headlines. Different business establishments on the island have been featured on local news, as some of the island’s regulations are not being followed, like sanitation standards.
