  • In a list released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Baguio City from the Philippines was included to be part of the new 64 UNESCO Creative Cities coming from 44 countries all over the world.

    As per UNESCO, these creative cities are joined in a network at the frontline of UNESCO’s efforts “to foster innovation and creativity as key drivers for a more sustainable and inclusive urban development.” Baguio City is also the first city from the Philippines to be represented in the Creative Cities network, under the Crafts and Folk Art Category.

    At present, UNESCO Creative Cities Network is composed of 180 cities from 72 countries. UNESCO Creative Cities Director-General Irina Bokova is the one who designated these 64 cities to be part of the said network. “These new designations showcase an enhanced diversity in city profiles and geographical balance, with 19 cities from countries not previously represented in the Network,” said Director-General Bokova, according to press statement.

    Some of the countries from Asia which are also now part of the new Creative Cities include Daegu Metropolitan City for Music, Chiang Mai in Thailand for Crafts and Folk Art, Yamagata City in Japan for Film, and Wuhan in China for Design.
