  • Retail and property mogul Henry Sy is still the richest man in the Philippines according to a list from Forbes.

    In the Forbes 2017 Billionaires list, SM Investments Corporation head Henry Sy ranked 94th out of the world’s 2,043 billionaires, a list which includes the likes of Bill Gates (#1), Warren Buffet (#2), and Mark Zuckerberg (#5).

    They placed Henry Sy’s net worth at US$12.7 billion, or a staggering P638.8 billion, all coming from SM Investments Corporation.

    13 other Filipinos made the list, with John Gokongwei Jr. of JG Summit placing 250th globally and second in the country with a net worth of US$5.8 billion (P291.7 billion). Lucio Tan of LT Group took this year’s third spot and is ranked 501st in the world with a net worth of US$3.7 billion (P186.1 billion).

    A note-worthy addition is 40-year-old business man Edgar Sia II, the man behind fastfood chain Mang Inasal. His net worth is currently at US$1 billion, or just over P50 billion. His partner in DoubleDragon Properties Corp., Tony Tan Caktiong, is also in the list with a net worth of US$3.4 billion, or P171 billion.

    The Forbes 2017 Billionaires list proved to be a record year for the world’s richest, with the list growing to 2,043 from 1,810 last year. It was the biggest increase in the Billionaires List since Forbes started tracking them 31 years ago.
