  • National Geographic recently hailed the Island of Great Santa Cruz, more known as the Zamboanga’s Pink Beach, as one of the 21 Best Beaches in the World. To be able to come up with the list, NatGeo considered the following: geological wonders, marine life, and thrilling activities that people can enjoy whilst in the island.

What caught the attention of NatGeo, as well as other tourists and travelers who have been and wanted to be in this island, is its pink sand which came from “billions of pieces of crushed red organ-pipe coral.” The number of tourists who visit the island is also regulated as they still need to make advance arrangements through the tourist office in Zamboanga.

Aside from the Pink Beach, some of the other islands which made it to the list are the following: Blue Bay in Mauritius, Papakolea Beach in Hawaii, Shell Beach in Western Australia, and Piscinas Beach in Sardinia.

The 3,435-hectare Pink Sand Beach in Zamboanga is only one of the two islands in the country that has a pink sand beach, the other island being Sila Beach in Northern Samar. It has also been eyed by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to be the next travel destination for backpackers and travellers. (Read: Pink Sand Beach in Zamboanga eyed as next travel destination)
