Executive Secretary Ernesto Abella made the announcement on Tuseday, January 3, in a press briefing held at Malacañang. He said that the award was given to the President based on his announcement of an independent foreign policy, which consists of distancing away from the United States and forging closer ties with China.

“The article also praises Duterte’s program of good governance and anti-corruption campaign as reason for his popularity among Filipinos,” he added.

Yazhou Zhoukan is a weekly international affairs magazine dubbed as the “Time magazine of the Chinese-speaking world.” It is distributed in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia.
