  • Cebu has gained yet another global prize as Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) received high recognition at the 2019 World Architectural Festival (WAF).

MCIA’s Terminal 2 is the winner of the Completed Buildings: Transport Category in what is dubbed to be the world’s largest interactive global architectural awards program and festival held last December 6, 2019, at Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

MCIA edged among other architectural structures in the category including Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport, Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Station, Taiwan’s Tainan Bus Station, Turkey’s Istanbul Airport, and Australia’s Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal.

Judges praised the terminal for its “simple and elegant” structure, as well as its use for many locally-sourced materials.

The internal spaces were also described to be “light and uncluttered,” with the design “capable of future extension.” This feature, for the judges, established “memorable travel experiences.”

The terminal’s architecture was designed by Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates, with support from Budji+Royal and Kenneth Cobonpue.

“With Mactan being the busiest international airport in the Philippines, this architecturally astounding building serves as an important gateway to the Philippines,” the Department of Tourism said in praise for the airport’s prize.

The vibrant Queen City of the South was also recently named one of UNESCO’s New Creative City of Design in October.
