Doctors play a vital role in someone’s life–they serve as a beacon of guidance to people who are experiencing different kinds of illnesses or complications.

When it comes to endocrine complications such as diabetes (the most common), and illnesses like osteoporosis, cholesterol problems, metabolic disorders, goiter, and obesity, Dr. Andrea Marie Macabuag-Olivia helps patients ease through any of these. She has been practicing Internal Medicing (IM) – Endocrinology for over four years.

She graduated at the University of Philippines (UP) Manila with a Bachelors Degree of Science in Pharmacy, and then she took up Medicine along with her internship at the University of Santo Tomas. She also acquired her residency, experience, and fellowship at the Makati Medical City (MMC).

Moreoever, she has been internationally recognized through her research in endocrinology, for which she got invites from Australia and Singapore.

During our interview with her, Dr. Macabuag-Olivia reminisced how the lack of medical-related professionals in her family sparked her interest to become one. She shared that whenever she would accompany a family member or a friend to their regular check-ups to the hospital, she would always be amazed by the doctors.

As a medical professional in endocrinology, she described her typical day at work starting with meeting and checking her patients’ statuses regarding their illnesses based on the lab tests, especially if her patient experienced a stroke or a heart attack.

Doctors have distinct characteristics and techniques when it comes to dealing with their patients. As for Dr. Macabuag-Olivia, she would usually have a strict conversation with her patients to make sure they understand and follow her advice. She aims to motivate, educate, and inspire them to get better not only by following prescriptions, getting regular check-ups, and changing lifestyle, but also by openly communicating with her.

For her parting advice, Dr. Macabuag-Olivia said: “It really is hard work. You should really like to become a doctor. If you think that it is not for you, it is not wrong to transfer. You must do what you love, so you can only finish becoming a doctor if you really like what you do.”
