  • Boracay Sees Fast-Approaching Rehabilitation with EDC’s BINHI; Signs Agreement with DENR
  • The government environmental initiative, BINHI, which means ‘seedling’ in English, is seen by Energy Development Corporation (EDC) as one of the main solutions for the continued rehabilitation of Boracay island in the Philippines.

Through BINHI’s goal of planting a total of 10 million trees, EDC signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on August 13, 2018, committing to adopt a 7.79-hectare wetland located at Brgy. Balabag in Boracay, designated to be planted only with native trees. EDC, which is also dubbed the “world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company”, is also eyeing to build an information center for visitors of the wetland, as well as a platform which will allow bird and bat-watching for its visitors.

Not only is BINHI focused on reforestation of EDC’s geothermal sites, but is also geared towards the propagation of threatened priority native species. With BINHI’s foresters’ successful location of samples of 96 native species and propagating it within their nurseries in Antipolo and Negros Oriental, local fauna are being supported, leading to better ecosystem conditions. Vegetative Material Reproduction (VMR) in Antipolo and Valencia houses EDC’s automated nurseries, which mirrors a natural forest habitat.

    Celebration of BINHI’s 10th Anniversary

BINHI’s over 200 volunteers, who recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, was able to plant species of Balite, Tabugay, Taruy, Talo-ot, Pili, and Kube trees to help Negros Island’s goal of reforestation– a portion of the now 2.5 million trees in total to be planted on Negros through the aid of 30 local partners of BINHI.

BINHI celebrates its 10th anniversary with guests, among which is Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco.
