Projeto Manila 2018 challenges students to create sustainable innovations
Recognizing the need to urge the local construction and design industry to confront the most significant challenge facing their community and practice today, WORLDBEX 2018 presents an open call to all architecture and engineering students in Luzon to lend their fresh and unique perspectives in addressing these issues in the upcoming Projeto Manila 2018.
A competition which originated in PHILBEX Cebu and eventually in PHILBEX Davao (two of which are regional installments of WORLDBEX), this edition of Projeto marks its first in Manila. Subscribing to the theme of this year’s WORLDBEX, which urges the builders and designers alike to take part in “Shaping Innovations Toward Sustainability,” participants are tasked to design a single-storey house with at least one bedroom, that is both climate-resilient and earthquake proof.
Limited to students taking up Architecture, Engineering, or any similar courses in any school, college, or university in Luzon, the competition requires a proficiency in Google Sketch Up and Autocad. There are two parts of the competition –the qualifying and final rounds. Interested students from the same school must form a group of at least three or a maximum of five members. However, a school can only be represented by up to five groups.
Once groups have been formed, participants must then submit a filled-up application form; a team description (max. of 150 words); a high-res official logo of their school; a creative shot of the team members; a design brief (max. of 150 words);a technical drawing, a perspective drawing, and a 3D file of the design in the following format: SAT, DWG on or before February 10.
The jury will then shortlist the top designs based on design, innovation, and originality as well as ease of use, functionality, material durability, and weigh. The selected designs to compete in the final rounds will be announced on February 12.
Once chosen, the groups competing in the final round of the competition must prepare a deck for the presentation of the design brief as well as an actual miniature scale model of the qualified design. Starting March 14 to 18, the scale models of the participating groups will be put on display at the 2nd floor lobby area of WORLDBEX 2018 while the actual presentation, deliberation, and awarding of the designs are set to happen on March 18. The final entries will be judged based on presentation, workmanship, relevance to the theme, and its market appeal.
Apart from having a unique chance to showcase their talents and capacity to innovatively work around the issues facing their practice, the winners of the first-ever Projeto Manila will be receiving cash prizes as well as slots at the WORLDBEX 2019 Seminars.
Projeto Manila 2018 is a key event highlight at WORLDBEX 2018 – the biggest construction exposition with three mega venues – which is happening on March 14 – 18 from 10 am to 8 pm at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Philippine Trade Training Center and, the SMX Convention Center in Pasay.
