No less than the National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante gave the details on how the government plans to celebrate over a century of Philippine Independence. Working with the theme “Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-sama Nating Balikatin,” the NHCP has a full day of activities just on June 12:

    • 8 a.m.: Flag raising and wreath laying at Rizal Park and other locations like Kawit, Cavite, Manila North Cemetery, Pamintuan Mansion, and the Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan.
    • A Vind’honneur at Malacañang Palace after flag raising and wreath laying
    • 3 p.m.: Cultural show and civic parade at Quirino Grandstand

President Rodrigo Duterte will be the guest of honor at the activities in Rizal Park and Quirino Grandstand, which will be capped by a fireworks display once the sun goes down. Vice President Leni Robredo will be joining Duterte at Rizal Park.

Duterte is expected to give his Independence Day speech on June 12 at Quirino Grandstand.

Escalante also said several government agencies have issued memos to hold similar events on June 12. He also said LRT1, LRT2, and MRT3 will be offering free rides to all passengers on June 12 courtesy of the DOTr. There will also be an attempt to complete a 2,000-person human flag formation at Quirino Grandstand and a light-and-sound tableau on June 11 and 12 courtesy of the National Parks Development Commission.

Because of the activities set for June 12, traffic rerouting will be done within the area of Rizal Park. Information about the rerouting will be released sometime this weekend.
