DICT to bring faster internet by 2017
Filipinos can now expect to have faster internet by 2017, according to the Department of Information Communications and Technology (DICT).
Since the Philippines is considered to be one of the countries with the slowest internet in Asia, the said department plans to hold a telecoms summit on 2017 where they will be discussing how to fix and improve the intenet issues and connectivity in the country.
Telecom regulators have also started to measure the internet speed of the top telecom service providers – a preparation for the said summit that is to be organized by the DICT.
DICT Secretary Rodolfo Salalima
In an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source, DICT Secretary Rodolfo Salalima said that aside from measuring internet speed in the country, the Department would also be communicating with the telcos. This action will be done so they will be able to know what the problems of these companies are and try to think of ways to resolve them.
Aside from improving the internet speed, the government is also planning to put up free nationwide broadband connection to those who do not have access to major networks. Salalima said that the government is eyeing for 1,300 Wi-Fi sites for 2016 and 100,000 sites for 2026.
“It is the duty of the government to see to it that the people who have no access to the telecommunication system be given the opportunity to exercise the right to telecommunicate,” Salalima said.
