In a recent report by Japanese newspaper Japan Times, Filipinos constitute the third largest group of foreign nationals in Japan, with 237,103 expats as of June 2016.

According to Japan Times, there are currently 2.31 million foreign nationals in Japan, with Chinese as the largest group with 677,571. Second largest group are South Koreans, who have 456,917. Other nationals such as Brazilians and Vietnamese have 176,284 and 175,744 respectively.

The number of nationals who are on mid to long term visas make up 85.1% of the total, with 713,604 permanent residents and 257,739 students. According to the said report, there is an increase of 3.4% from six months before, partly because of “a rise in number of trainees arriving to earn cash and skills,” as per the Justice Ministry of Japan.
