Improvements to expect in MRT-3 within 2016
Installations of free WiFis, new industrial fans, enhanced power supply, arrival of 48 light rail vehicles (LRVs) and refurbishment of facilities – these are just some of the ongoing Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) upgrades, as released by the Department of Transportation Communications (DOTC) on its official website.

Since the prevailing administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, better change has been seen in more than one way and form. Social and industrial improvements have been escalating so quickly, particularly in road and traffic issues in the Philippines. Though some are still undetectable to commuters, Filipino citizens are left with their high hopes of a better commuting experience in the country.

DOTC is on a serious mission to directly solve and give quick and efficient solutions to MRT-3 problems. Last January, the transportation agency has awarded more MRT-3 improvement projects that aim to provide passengers a better commuting experience and an enhanced system reliability. Within 2016, expect these MRT-3 improvements:
● New industrial fans for greater air flow and ventilation will be installed at station areas, such as the platforms and concourses within 90 calendar days from issuance of the Notice to Proceed (NTP).
● New multi-purpose road-rail vehicle that will be used for the maintenance of the overhead catenary system. The Joint Venture of Kempal Construction and Supply Corporation and Maquinaria del Eo, the winning bidder for the P46.39-million contract, will deliver the maintenance equipment within 330 calendar days from issuance of NTP.
● New traction motors that will replace depleted rotational spares was awarded to Ad Lib-YongJi Joint Venture for P79.86 million. These motors should have the same performance specifications as the current ones and should be delivered within 300 calendar days from issuance of NTP.
● Refurbishment of 34 Mitsubishi-brand escalators which will be processed within 223 calendar days from the issuance of the Notice to Proceed. This is to be effective for the following stations:
○ Araneta Center-Cubao (8 units)
○ Shaw Boulevard (8 units)
○ Boni (2 units)
○ Buendia (4 units)
○ Ayala (10 units)
○ Taft (2 units)
In the past few weeks of this month, some commuters have noticed a faster MRT-3 operation. Glitches will always be inevitable, but let’s see what more wonders the Duterte administration can do in six years — or maybe six months!
