PH celebrates 445th Manila Day
This June 24, Filipinos celebrate the founding anniversary of Manila, the country’s capital city.

Manila Day is recognized as a public holiday in Manila City. Located at the eastern shore of Manila Bay, Manila is composed of 16 districts which are Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, Paco, Pandacan, Port Area, Quiapo, Sampaloc, San Andres, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Santa Mesa, and Tondo.
It was on June 24, 1571 when Manila was proclaimed as Spain’s capital city in the Philippines where in a government was established. Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson declared June 24 as Manila City’s foundation day and it was in 1963 when then Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas changed the name from “Foundation Day” to “Manila Day.”
Manila is also considered to be the home of the country’s government agencies and commercial businesses in PH. In 2012, Manila was listed as a global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Aside from that, Manila is home to Philippines’ history, with cities brimming with cultural attraction from urban to ancient times.

During Manila Day, several activities are lined up to commemorate the special occasion. One example would be the “Balik-Tanaw sa Maynila” photo exhibit which was launched to revive tourism in Manila.
