One of the things popular British chef Jonathan Phang is famed for is his gastronomic journeys aboard some of the world’s poshest trains. These trains provide their customers with the old-world glamour of times gone by coupled with five-star dining.

This time, Jonathan along with two lucky Cignal and SkyCable subscribers, embarked on a three-day train ride aboard the opulent Eastern and Oriental Express. The journey took them through countries Singapore, Malaysia, and the city of Bangkok. The highlights of the trip would be their market tour in the royal city of Kuala Kangsar and the exclusive dinner that featured dishes prepared by Jonathan himself and the train’s executive chef Yannis Martineau.

Playing the role of host to the lucky winners for the duration of the trip, Jonathan toured them around the Kuala Kangsar Market as he and chef Yannis bought ingredients for the dinner that was to be held the following night. Here, they observed how local favorites, such as Nasi Lemak and Teh Tarik are made. They also tried the Durian fruit while they were there. They capped off their visit with a stop at the Perak’s Royal Mosque, the Ubudiah Mosque. The evening was a night of song led by Jonathan as they headed forth for Thailand.

Upon arriving in Thailand, the winners and other visitors stopped by the River Kwai. There, along with the nearby “Death Railway”, thousands of lives were lost during its construction in World War II. A traditional dancer from Thailand entertained the guests as they sipped their cocktails. Jonathan, on the other hand, was busy in the kitchen as he prepared for the Jonathan Phang Gourmet Getaway Dinner Event along with the Eastern & Oriental Express’ talented chefs. The dishes that composed the night’s menu are from Jonathan’s childhood and included in his Award-winning book “The Pepperpot Club”. The trip was truly memorable for all.
