As the only Chinatown found in Mindanao, Davao Chinatown is the main residential area of the Chinese community in the region. This 44-hectare Chinatown, which extends to Santana Avenue, Monteverde Avenue, Ramon Magsaysay Street, and Leon Garcia Street.

    Chinatown Arch

The Davao City Chinatown Development Council launched Chinatown in January 2009. The archways, which steal attention because of its artistic design, make it a popular trademark in the city. These are also called “pailou” or “paifang,” and are decorated with symbolic Chinese figures which symbolize friendship and unity among Filipinos and Chinese in Davao City. The archways are colored red, which is always associated with good fortune and happiness. According to Make it Davao website, the design of the archways are inspired from the 400 year old architectural garden in Shanghai, China.

Four archways can be seen in the city, namely, The Arch of Prosperity in Uyanguren, The Arch of Unity near Magsaysay Park, The Arch of Peace in Sta. Ana Avenue, and the Arch of Friendship near Jones Circle. All these can be reached through a jeepney ride, or you can also walk if you want to.

    Establishments in the area

What you can find here in Davao Chinatown are several business establishments such as shopping centers which sell goods from items made in China, to electronics and grocery finds. There are also restaurants and banks within Chinatown so it is truly a tourist destination on its own. Majority of these establishments are owned by Chinese businessmen. Every Chinese New Year, there are lined up programs and activities which highlight the culture of Chinese community in Davao City.

Celebrate the rich Chinese culture at Philippines’ largest Chinatown – the Davao Chinatown!
