  • Ballet Philippines Stages Rock Opera Ballet ‘Tales of the Manuvu’ from March 22 to 31
  • Tales of the Manuvu is one of Ballet Philippines’ most celebrated pieces since its first premiere over 40 years ago. This 2019, you can watch the unique rock opera ballet again starting March 22 to 31, 2019, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Theater, Pasay City.

    The original choreography of Tales of Manuvu is by National Artist for Dance and Artistic Director of Ballet Philippines, Alice Reyes while the opera libretto is by National Artist for Literature, Bienvenido Lumbera.

    One of the many inspirations of the Tales of the Manuvu is the folk tales of the Manobo tribe in Mindanao. This adaptation of the creation story brought together rock, opera, pop, and ballet on the stage.

    Because the show brought audiences from all walks of life to one main theater in a collective celebration of Philippine culture, the Ballet Philippines has brought it back to conclude their 49th Season.

    New Sets and Musical Arrangements

    Broadway theater designer and multi-awarded filmmaker Loy Arcenas (Once On This Island) is lending his genius this season to the creation of the mystical Manobo realm.

    Original music and score, which makes Tales of the Manuvu a masterpiece that mirrors the country’s rich pool of talent, will likewise be refreshed with new arrangements by Francis de Veyra.

    Powerhouse Cast of the Tales, Then and Now

    For this year’s revival, they will be bringing back the stage icons of Philippine music, Celeste Legaspi and Ding Mercado, cast of the Tales of the Manuvu premiere in 1977.

    They will be joined this year by some of the industry’s brightest to include Aicelle Santos (Gigi of Miss Saigon UK & Ireland tour). Joining her are multi-awarded performers Shiela Valderama, Lorenz Martinez, Nar Cabico, Reuben Laurente, Poppert Bernadas and Lara Maigue.
