  • Motorists bound for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) may soon find a bit of reprieve as a section of the NAIA Expressway (NAIAX) is set to open this September.

In a statement released last August 15, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar said, “We are in the process of doing safety checks. With the help of DOTC, we are confident that the public would soon be able to access a key phase of the NAIA Expressway Project within the first 100 days of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.”

“Passenger traffic at NAIA has an average annual growth rate of 9.5%. The cost of congestion per day in Metro Manila is 2.4 billion pesos. We are keen in ensuring that the chronic traffic congestion at the vicinity of the airport is solved almost immediately,” he added.

The NAIAX project is a four-lane, 7.75-kilometer elevated expressway that will connect NAIA Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4 with the South Luzon Expressway via Sales (Nichols) Interchange, the Manila Cavite Express Tollway (CAVITEX), and Macapagal Boulevard.

16 on- and off-ramps are being constructed along the expressway that will lead to the Villamor Airbase, Resorts World, NAIA Terminal 3, MIAA Road, Imelda Avenue, CAVITEX, Seaside Drive, and Macapagal Boulevard.

It is expected to reduce travel time between Skyway/SLEX and NAIA Terminal 1 by 16 minutes. Progress of the project to date is at 79%, with the Paranaque River alignment already at 100%.
