The 2.88-megawatt solar plant was switched on last Monday, May 30, breaking the record held by SM City North EDSA, which stood at 1.5 MW. Power from the solar plant will be used exclusively by the mall, cutting its carbon emissions by 2.25 million kilograms – equivalent to planting 100,000 trees.

According to RLC President Frederick Go, “The sprawling design of Robinsons Starmills and the wide open surrounding space make it ideal for a large scale solar power facility.”

He also said RLC “is continuously looking for ways to adopt sustainable practices and minimize its carbon footprint by steadily shifting to the use of renewable energy.”

RLC now has two rooftop solar plants in the province of Pampanga; the first one is located at Robinsons Angeles. Other Robinsons malls to get rooftop solar plants are located in Palawan, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Roxas, Antique, Novaliches, Tacloban, and Bacolod.

The 10 malls combined will have a total capacity of 12.5 MW. Once all 10 are up and running, these solar facilities will provide 14.6 million kilowatt-hours of power to these Robinsons malls, significantly reducing their carbon footprint.

“All our future malls will also be designed to ensure that the shape and layout of the roofs will allow the most efficient installation of solar panels to make the most of the power provided by the sun so that we will be using even less electricity from the grid,” Go said.
