  • PH’s Pujada Bay and 2 Others Are Now Most Beautiful Bays in the World
  • Through the efforts of the people of Mati City, Davao Oriental, Pujada Bay, along with Mayo and Balete Bays joins the lone Puerto Galera Bay in the list of “Most Beautiful Bays in the World” representing the Philippines.

On February 21, the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Association (MBBW) welcomed the three bays into the list through an official communication with the provincial government of Davao.

Pujada Bay is walled by the Guang-guang Peninsula on the right and the Pujada Peninsula on the left. Due to the cove formed within the lands, the water on Pujada Bay is protected from the crashing waves, which is also an advantage for fishermen and seafarers especially in times of calamities.

Within the bay are two islands that are famous for their powdery white-sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters—Pujada Island and Waniban Island—making it a frequent stop for tourists and vacationers alike.

It was a long time ago that Pujada Bay is declared protected under the National Integrated Protected Areas System stated in the Presidential Proclamation No. 431. Pujada Bay covers almost 21,200-hectares including its landscapes and seascapes, making it protected under the law as well.

The attempt to join the most prestigious list, however, started not until some officials from Davao presented the application of Pujada Bay during the MBBW congress in Japan in October 2019.

In January of this year, Treasurer Guy Rousset and General Manager Bruno Bodard conducted the four-day visitation of the bay.

It was not as they planned that the bays of Mayo and Balete would also get to be included on the list but it seems that everything went their way. Since originally Mati City only applied for the inclusion of Pujada Bay, Mayo and Balete were not in the itinerary to be visited. The MBBWA representatives insisted on visiting the two other bays as well during their trip.

Coming after their success of making it on the list, tourism is seen to boost not only in the bays and in the city but as well as in the whole province. Being on the list is just the first wave of the challenge for the city, staying on the list is an even bigger challenge for them.

As a continuing effort to preserve the beauty of Pujada Bay, septic system is being established along with drainage area to avoid the leak of pollutants.

MBBWA’s annual congress is bound to happen this October in Morocco wherein the official awarding of the MBBWA certificate will be given to Davao Oriental.
