What you need to know about ‘E-Trike Project’

In an effort to ensure energy security through efficient and clean technologies, the Philippines’ Department of Energy (DoE) implements “Market Transformation through Introduction of Energy Efficient Electric Vehicles Project” or simply called “The E-Trike Project,” which will help significantly in decreasing air pollution in the country.

This E-Trike Project is expected to help in the form of energy security, where there are ‘approximately 3.5 million conventional combustion engine tricycles and motorcycles’ which emit millions of tons of CO₂ every year. With this problem that add impact to the worsening air quality and climate change risks, the use of E-Trikes are seen to decrease air pollution which can help save the environment.

With the financial help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Clean Technology Fund (CTF), this $504-million project aims to deploy 100,000 E-Trikes nationwide to replace gasoline-fed tricycles, reduce annual petroleum consumption by 2.8% per year, and achieve 79% CO₂ footprint avoidance.

Aside from being able to help the environment, E-Trikes also have additional benefits for various sectors. This would mean higher income for driver-operators, and stronger economy for local manufacturing, charging, and supplies industries as well.

The E-Trikes will have unique features compared to traditional trikes such as 5 passenger-seating capacity, less maintenance, no noise and less vibration, and a maximum speed of 60 km/h. This E-Trike also complies with Land Transportation Office’s Road Worthiness Guidelines and Regulations that ensures safety for both passengers and drivers as well.
