  • In a news published by Rappler, Filipino chess prodigy Wesley So wins the annual Tata Steel Chess tournament last January 29 held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

     

    Last January 29, he easily defeated Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 13th and final round.

    So solidly played throughout 2016 and has never lost any chess battles in more than 56 encounters — and these are the Sinquefield Cup in August last year, The Grand Chess Tour in London, then the London Chess Classic and now, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee.

    So is currently ranked 4th at FIDE Rating list for January with 2808 ELO points.

    “He is a great fighter, and it’s a pleasure playing with him” So’s humble statement for his opponent after the game. “Winning this tournament is huge, with the world champion in it. It’s a wonderful start [of] the year.” he added.

    Several games are still being played at Tata Steel Tournament but with 9/13,  So has won the tournament as he has an unreachable 1.5 lead over his 3 rivals.
