  • Akamai: PH mobile internet speed ‘fastest’ in APAC for Q3 of 2016
  • The Philippines just hit another first as the country’s mobile internet speed was shown to be the “fastest” in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region according to content delivery network (CDN) service provider Akamai.

Data from Akamai’s State of the Internet, a report that sheds light into global internet connectivity, recorded an average peak mobile internet speed of 13.9 megabits per second (Mbps) from July to September 2016, beating out countries like Australia (12.8 Mbps), Japan (11.6 Mbps), South Korea (11.2 Mbps), and our neighbors Indonesia (10.9 Mbps) and Singapore (8.5 Mbps).

The data, however, was only used as reference since Akamai was unable to gather enough data on mobile units connected to the internet via mobile data. Australia claimed the fastest average peak mobile internet speed at 12.8 Mbps.

ALMOST, BUT NOT QUITE. Mobile internet speeds in the Philippines reached 13.9 Mbps, but failed to meet the required number of unique mobile connections according to Akamai’s State of the Internet report for Q3.

In their report, Akamai wrote that they recorded fewer than 25,000 unique IPv4 addresses in the country that could be classified as mobile (i.e. devices connected to the internet via mobile data). The report also did not account for penetration of LTE in the country, which is largely limited to big cities such as those within Metro Manila.

Even with the country not meeting the required number of unique mobile connections, reports from The Philippine Star and the Philippine Daily Inquirer say that it is still an improvement from their Q2 report (April – June 2016), when the country recorded an average peak mobile internet speed of 8.5 Mbps.
