AksyonVAW: a mobile app for women against online abuse

Harassed online? Don’t know what to do? Here’s an app to help you.

In a world where cyber bullies and trolls dominate social media, it’s comforting to know that there’s someone we can count on in times when we are attacked and harassed online. So to help women out of this dilemma, a non-government organization called The Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) launched an app called AksyonVAW (Violence Against Women) as a helpful tool in empowering women against cyber abuse.

 

AksyonVAW. An app that targets to help girls and women regarding cyber abuse.

 

AksyonVAW is an android-based app that aims to educate users to know their rights and to keep safe online. FMA partnered with 8 Layer Technologies to develop the said app, which combats gender-based violence. This app is especially for girls and women where tips are featured to help out abused individuals.

According to FMA, AksyonVAW features three scenarios of technology-related violence against women which are cyber-bullying, identity theft, and online harassment. With each story comes a scenario that will help the user choose which action he/she has to take. For example, one can choose to report it to authorities or keep mum about it. Once an option is chosen, a resulting scenario will appear. These responses are cases based on Philippine law.

The idea in developing the app rooted from FMA’s technology-related VAW works. In 2012, FMA started mapping cases like these that help in fighting against online violence.
