  • As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of most educational institutions, instructors have resorted to technology to be able to continue teaching their students. While effective teaching has become difficult due to environmental changes and lack of classroom interaction, the most plausible choice is to have the students learn through digital platforms in which they are most familiar with — streaming services.

Recently, Netflix has made several of its educational documentaries online for free on their Youtube channel due to the volume of requests that teachers have made. With this, students can learn essential and relevant topics, even without a Netflix subscription.

Their playlist covers diverse topics such as science, humanities, and art through the following titles:

    Our Planet

Netflix’s Our Planet focuses on the different fields that make up our world. Composed of 8 episodes that break down the different environmental processes, geographical accounts, and zoology along with other topics concerned with earth science, this documentary will provide in-depth information about our planet and insights on what has already been discovered.

    Chasing Coral

Similar to the documentary mentioned above, Chasing Coral focuses on a much specialized subject of science which is marine biology. This will show the complexities and difficulties faced by marine biologists when it comes to the process of documentation as they battle technical malfunctions and the force of nature to see the world below the waves.

    13TH

13TH tackles heavy subjects such as racism and the power dynamics present in U.S. prison systems. The documentary contains archival footage and testimonials from activists and scholars as curated by director Ava DuVernays. Due to its sensitive content, this documentary might not be suitable for ages 17 and under.

    Knock Down The House

Following the lives of four female candidates who entered the 2018 race for Congress, Knock Down The House shows the challenges they face to earn a spot and a voice in the government. Moreover, this shows the candidates’ personal experiences as we follow them throughout their campaigns.

    Period. End of Sentence.

Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short Subject, Period. End of Sentence. shows the lives of women in rural India who make low-cost sanitary pads where the stigma of menstruation persists. The documentary shows how these women fought their way toward financial independence where male power is placed at the top of the power structure.

    The White Helmets

The White Helmets, like Period. End of Sentence. won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject. Dealing with a serious topic such as war, the 40-minute feature film shows war-torn Syria and how a group of indomitable first responders risks their lives to rescue civilians who have been affected by daily airstrikes.

    Zion

Nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Floyd Russ’ directed documentary, Zion, features Zion Clark — an athlete born without legs. Gaining an interest in the field of sports, Zion Clark found his calling in competitive wrestling.

    Explained

The Explained Series, in partnership with Vox Media Studies and Vox, takes the viewers into a world of diverse and culturally relevant topics that will surely engage the audience through questions and ideas.
