  • Cavite Gateway Terminal Scheduled to Open in November
  • The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is ready to start the operations of the country’s first container barge port, the Cavite Gateway Terminal (CGT) at Tanza, Cavite this coming November 5.

The CGT is another project included in this year’s line-up of completed projects from Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build Program. In cooperation with the DOTr, the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) privately funded the CGT project, which started its construction last October 2017.

Its goal is to accept cargo coming from international ports in Manila going to Cavite with the use of Roll-on, Roll-off or RoRo boat operations. It is also expected to help ease the traffic in major roads in Manila by transporting cargo and people into waterways instead, said DOTr.

With a capacity equal to 115,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, the terminal’s construction should result in an approximate of 140,000 fewer trucks every year, reducing road traffic once it starts its operation this November.

One of its features is its access to other major Luzon port facilities aiming a cost-effective and time-bound entree to the Cavite market, being only 11 kilometers away from the Cavite Export Processing Zone Authority (CEPZA). According to DOTr, passenger ferry services will also be pursued soon following discussions between the government and the operator.
