Globe: 5G Broadband Will Be Available by Q2 of 2019
Fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology will soon hit the Philippines as Globe Telecom, in an announcement by President and CEO Ernest Cu, looks to have the technology commercially available in the second quarter of 2019, making them the first provider of 5G connectivity in the country.

With 5G technology, users will be able to browse the internet at higher speeds with lower latency and better capacity. Imagine a fixed wireless broadband at fiber speed as the company will be able to use Air Fiber technology which “makes use of fixed location wireless radios instead of fiber, could provide speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps,” said Ernest Cu in a presentation last week.
Globe and Huawei are collaborating in this journey, ensuring network readiness to support these services. Together, their goal is to provide better internet connectivity in the Philippines. With the necessary assets in place, Globe is now upgrading their network to support the upgrade.
While upgrading their network, Globe will continue to improve on the 4G/LTE technology. “5G will not operate as a standalone technology, at least not for the earliest use cases. How 4G/LTE integrates with 5G will determine the overall fixed wireless experience in the next few years,” said Globe Chief Technology and Information Officer Gil Genio.
While there are already many Philippine residents enjoying the faster 4G internet, the emergence of the next technology will motivate investments, increase employment, and bring more sales. Globe foresees innovations and economic growth in the Philippines after the implementation of 5G.
