Before wrapping up the year to a near end, we have listed some of the most important news that you need to know in the Philippines from the past week.
DOT Secretary, Wanda Teo extends full support for “Go Lokal!”
The Philippines has been known not only because of its rich culture and heritage but also through its best selling local products and services. For some time, the country has also been taking part in exporting locally made goods, made available for other people overseas.
Last December 21, 2017, Duty-Free Philippines Corp. (DFPC) collaborated with the Department of Industry (DTI) in launching a new concept store showcasing locally made products created by the Filipino enterprise community.
With this collaboration, “Go Lokal!” was then born which is seen as a tool that would be helpful in promoting the richness of the Filipino culture and industry. Some of the products that are featured in this retail store will include snacks made from local ingredients, home décors and furniture, toys, clothes, and a lot more.
PAL makes history after crossing the Polar region
It was on December 17, 2017 when Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR 119 flew 16.16 hours non-stop from Toronto, Canada to Manila, making them the first Filipino airline to cross the polar region.
In a statement posted on their website last December 20, PAL said they decided to use the polar route to cut down the old 21-hour travel time from Toronto to Manila, which has a stop in Vancouver. At present, PAL plans to use their fleet of long-range Boeing B777s for the polar route. The ultra–long range Airbus A350s, which will be delivered starting 2018, will also serve the said route.
“PAL will be operating these nonstop Manila-Toronto and Toronto-Manila flights on a regular four times weekly schedule, with departures from Manila every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; and departures from Toronto every Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday,” the flagship carrier said in the same statement.
Jacob Ang held as Asian karting champion in Macau
Filipinos are known to be free-spirited yet very competitive in making the country’s name stand out against other countries worldwide may it be academically, sports, pageants and a lot more. Jacob Ang, a Filipino kart racer was able to defy the odds and was able to bring home the biggest award after winning in a karting championship in Macau last December 9 and 10.

After facing a number of challenges, tragedies, and difficulties, US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim still sees a glimpse of hope for the Philippines carries a lot of potential through its economic performance and competitiveness.
Even after achieving a competitive economic sector, the country still faces challenges especially in infrastructure but despite that, the current administration is now focusing on the particular issue, later on providing better business opportunities within the country. In addition, the US intends to continue providing assistance to the country in different sectors like health, education, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and governance.
